Making a custom cosmetic bag by yourself is a satisfying DIY craft project. You can freely match fabrics, add decorative details and tailor the size to perfectly fit your makeup collection. Below is a complete beginner-friendly sewing tutorial for a standard lined zipper cosmetic bag.
Outer decorative fabric + soft lining fabric

Select your favorite outer fabric and lining fabric. Cut two identical rectangular pieces for the exterior, and two matching rectangles for lining. A standard daily cosmetic bag uses 9-inch × 12-inch rectangles; adjust dimensions to create mini purse-sized pouches or large travel wash bags.
Lay one outer fabric piece right-side up on your work table. Place the zipper face-down along the top raw edge. Cover the zipper with one lining piece placed right-side down, align all top edges neatly and secure with pins. Install the zipper foot on your sewing machine and stitch along the pinned edge to fix the zipper between outer and lining fabric. Flip the two fabrics so wrong sides touch, then iron the seam flat for a tidy finish.
Repeat the operation for the opposite zipper edge. Lay the second outer rectangle right-side up, attach the free zipper edge face-down, then cover with the second lining piece, pin and stitch. Flip and iron the seam flat as before.
Partially unzip the zipper for easy flipping later. Fold the two outer fabric pieces right sides together, and fold the two lining pieces right sides together. Align all vertical side edges and pin securely. Stitch down both sides of the bag. Leave a 4–5 inch unsewn gap at the bottom edge of the lining fabric—this opening is used to turn the bag right-side out later.
To make the bag sit flat without tipping over, pinch each four-layer corner to line up side seams and bottom seams, forming a triangular shape. Measure 1 inch inward from the triangle tip and draw a horizontal line across the triangle. Pin the line, stitch along the mark, then trim excess fabric beyond the seam. Repeat for all four corners.
Pull the entire bag right-side out through the reserved opening in the lining. Use a blunt tool like a chopstick or pencil eraser to gently push out all four corners for sharp, clean shapes. Hand-sew the opening on the lining closed with invisible ladder stitches, then tuck the entire lining neatly inside the outer cosmetic bag shell.
